Intravenous stem cells therapy may benefit heart attack patients

Intravenous stem cells therapy may benefit heart attack patients: "Washington, Mar 28 (ANI):

Heart attack patients who received an new intravenous adult stem cell therapy, Provacel, experienced a lower number of adverse events, such as cardiac arrhythmias, and had significant improvements in heart, lung and global function compared to those who received a placebo, according to a six-month Phase I study data of the trial conducted by Rush Medical Centre.

Adult stem cells are designed by nature to perform tissue repair in a mature adult. It is believed that these cells can be used in patients unrelated to the donor, without rejection, eliminating the need for donor matching and recipient immune suppression. Once transplanted, the cells promote healing of damaged or diseased tissues.

'We were confident in the safety profile given our previous experience using the intravenous form of these stem cells to treat other diseases in later stage clinical trials. However, we did not expect to see the across-the-board clinical improvement observed in patients at this early stage of testing,' Mills added. (ANI) "

Having more stem cells circulating in the blood is beneficial to heart attack patients. That's what this short article is saying. The increase in stem cells for these patients came from another person. We all have our own stem cells, even someone who just had a heart attack.

Call me squeemish but I prefer the idea of releasing my own stem cells from my own bone marrow, to having someone else's added to my blood stream. Though this is wonderful, what if it doesn't have to be a complicated, expensive procedure? What if anyone who wanted to could release more of their own stem cells, every day? See my sig.

Now scientists create a sheep that's 15% human | the Daily Mail

Now scientists create a sheep that's 15% human the Daily Mail:

"The sheep have 15 per cent human cells and 85 per cent animal cells - and their evolution brings the prospect of animal organs being transplanted into humans one step closer. "

Does anyone else think that the millions invested in this might be better used to educate people about nutrition so they can stay healthy and not need organ transplants to begin with?

This just doesn't sit well with me. I wouldn't want a sheep to have to be slaughtered so I could have one if it's organs. I am not currently dying of anything an organ transplant might help, though, so until I walk a mile...

Still it creeps me out. I think learning to care for our bodies needs to be a higher priority. That's why I started my organic foods mom website.

Human stem cells stalled brain disease in mice - Stem Cell Research - MSNBC.com

Human stem cells stalled brain disease in mice - Stem Cell Research - MSNBC.com:

"Human stem cells taken from both embryos and fetuses delayed a fatal brain and nerve disease in mice, moving throughout the brain to take on the jobs of damaged neurons, scientists report.

They said their study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, represents the first time a human embryonic stem cell has successfully treated a disease in an animal."

Embryonic stem cell research gets surprise support - Los Angeles Times

Embryonic stem cell research gets surprise support - Los Angeles Times: "From my standpoint, it is clear today that American science will be better-served, and the nation will be better-served, if we let our scientists have access to more stem cell lines,' Dr. Elias A. Zerhouni, director of the National Institutes of Health, told the Senate health appropriations subcommittee, which oversees the agency's nearly $29-billion budget.

'We cannot, I would think, be second-best in this area,' Zerhouni said. 'I think it is important for us not to fight with one hand tied behind our back here, and NIH is key to that.'"

A wise man, this Zerhouni.

Daily Kos: Mainstream Issue of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Daily Kos: Mainstream Issue of Embryonic Stem Cell Research:

Snipped from the article:

"I can just hear the legislators in their speeches on the House or Senate floor saying: 'Well, I just had a group of wheelchair users wheel through my office, and they NEVER even brought up the Stem Cell Research issue,......so I don't think they feel it's that important,.......let's just stick with the federal funding of umbilical cord blood stem cells, and the 'non-destructive' stem cell research that the federal government already funds'."

If you support embryonic stem cell research, please make your voice heard. Funding is stalled because of a few powerful people who oppose it for religious reasons. So many people think it is a good idea but never let their legislators know. Your voice matters.

Just let them know you'd like them to vote for funding embryonic stem cell research. Easy-peasy.
