Man walks, courtesy stem cell therapy

The Tribune, Chandigarh, India - Main News: "A 23-year-old man, who was paralysed from below the waist, is now able to walk after the first successful stem cell therapy in India for spinal cord injuries was conducted at a hospital here.

According to Dr J.S. Rajkumar, chairman, Lifeline Hospitals, the young man, Akbar Ali, suffered serious injuries in his spinal cord when he fell from the fourth floor of a building last October. He was then working at a construction site in Abu Dhabi.

Though he underwent a surgery to stabilise his spinal cord, it was not successful. After he returned to India a month later, he lost sensation in his legs and was paralysed below the waist.

He could not control his urine and bowel movements and was thus admitted to Lifeline Hospitals. The doctors there diagnosed him as a patient for autologous stem cell therapy wherein the stem cells from the patient's body are taken and used at the injured spot.

The technology, which is available at the hospital in collaboration from the Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine, Japan, was applied to Ali’s body. Nearly 100 ml of his bone marrow was removed, harvested and isolated before the stem cells were injected near the injured spot in his spinal cord.

The stem cells emit trophic factors, which enable neurons and vessels to grow; a part of them becomes integral to the region, another component becomes part of the growing nerves.
Two months into the therapy, Ali has now regained 50 per cent sensation below his waist. He can control his urine for up to two hours and can also walk.

Lifeline doctors said this treatment could be used for paraplegics, but usually worked better on younger people with more recent injuries.

The hospital is presently examining the use of this therapy in treating cardiac problems, liver failure, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.

Of the various sources of stem cells, the autologous stem cell therapy was used by the hospital as there was no risk of rejection nor was there any concern of medical ethics.

Doctors say that preserving stem cells is a kind of bio-insurance for an entire family as the stem cells could help in the treatment of the person’s siblings, parents and even grandparents. While preserved cord blood stem cells are a perfect match for the child from whose umbilical cord it was collected, there is only a 25 per cent chance of it being a perfect match for other family members.

Science & Technology at Scientific American.com: Sight for Sore Eyes -- [ STEM CELLS ] -- Progress in cell transplants to heal damaged retinas

Science & Technology at Scientific American.com: Sight for Sore Eyes -- [ STEM CELLS ] -- Progress in cell transplants to heal damaged retinas:

"Medical researchers hoping to reverse blindness have turned their gaze toward stem cells, and recent experiments have shown that these cells could replace photoreceptors lost in macular degeneration. "

My mom has the wet version of macular degeneration. She lost her central vision very quickly at age 57 and is now leagally blind.

Another snip:

"But treating patients who have advanced degrees of macular degeneration or other photoreceptor diseases will ultimately require repairing the photoreceptor cells themselves."

Maybe, just maybe if there were enough circulating stem cells in the blood, the body could repair this sort of damage itself? For the record, I don't know and don't claim to offer something that will. Just pondering...

Stem Cell Advances in Treating Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis

Stem Cell Advances in Treating Alzheimer's and Multiple Sclerosis: The use of pure cord blood stem cells by a team of research doctors in Mexico has resulted in breakthrough improvements in patients with Alzheimer's disease and progressive multiple sclerosis.

Snipped from the article:

"Multiple Sclerosis:

Jim Haverlock, 67, has struggled for thirteen years with progressive multiple sclerosis, an insidious neurologic disease which has steadily eroded his balance, energy and ability to speak clearly and walk without a cane.

During November 2006 Jim received an IV (intravenous) drip infusion of cord blood stem cells that had been genetically modified to express a growth factor called ciliary neurotrophic growth factor (CNGF). This particular growth factor has been shown to encourage remyelination of demyelinated nerves in animal models.

By early February Jim was reporting high levels of physical and mental energy, better balance and the ability to crisscross his house on foot without a cane (Something nearly impossible prior to the stem cell treatment).

Jim , who is very active in terms of helping out fellow MS sufferers and their families, welcomes queries by phone at 1-509-997-0204 (9 AM to 5 PM Pacific Time). Jim has posted a chronicle of his response to stem cell therapy online at http://14ushop.com/flyin-blind

This is awesome! Read more at using the link above. Please crosspost this information as much a possible. Wouldn't it have been nice for this advance to have been made in the U.S?

Scientists Determine How Adult Stem Cells Repair Cardiac Tissue

Stem Cell Research
Snipped from the article:

"It is marvelous that adult stem cells can help heal a heart, and by understanding the mechanisms involved, we may be able to refine and optimize the process,” he said.
But there are not enough natural stem cells available in a body to mount an effective repair response to a heart attack, Yeh said, which is why researchers and clinicians are focused on boosting that response.

This is exciting news. What these researchers are apparently not aware of is that there is already a way to boost the circulation of stem cells in the blood, using an aquatic botanical.

Another snip:

And in the future, given what the researchers also have discovered about how stem cells can build new cells to line blood vessels, it may be possible to “choose to ether augment rebuilding of heart muscle or restoration of blood vessels, depending on what is therapeutically best for the patient.”

It's not glamorous, but the truth here is that the body already knows what to do with the stem cells if they are available.

If you simply facilitate the release of more of a person's own stem cells and let them determine where the particular body needs regeneration, this will help more people. There are always going to be extreme cases for the doctors to experiment on or course, for those who are not able to give the body the time it needs to renew itself. Which is why this is such good news.

Flawed stem cell data withdrawn - opinion - 15 February 2007 - New Scientist

Flawed stem cell data withdrawn - opinion - 15 February 2007 - New Scientist: "Many researchers are unable even to isolate them (adult stem cells). “They’re very testy cells,” observes Amy Wagers of Harvard University, who spent a week in Verfaillie’s lab trying in vain to learn the technique. "

Adult stem cells are hard to work with, hence the lack of studies, or extremely difficult to duplicate studies.

Stem Cell Therapy for Heart Disease and Peripheral Artery Disease - Basic Stem Cell Information

Stem Cell Therapy for Heart Disease and Peripheral Artery Disease - Basic Stem Cell Information:

Embryonic Stem Cells

Advantages

Because they have the potential to become any cell in the human body, embryonic stem cells are commonly considered to hold the most promise for treating disease and replacing tissue and cells.
Large numbers can be easily grown in the laboratory.

Disadvantages

Safety and effectiveness in humans has not yet been determined.
Because they have the potential to become any cell in the human body, they are difficult for scientists to control.
They can grow out-of-control forming tumors.
They can change into unintended types of cells in the body. For example cells intended to become liver cells may become pancreatic cells.
The Patient's immune system rejection of embryonic cells has yet to be overcome.

Ethical Issues

Many people oppose embryonic stem cell research because they believe that once formed, the embryo is a human life that should not be destroyed. This is a very significant political, moral, and religious issue for many.

Adult Stem Cells

Advantages

Have been safely used in humans for over 30 years.
No danger of immune system rejection with cells from the patient's own body.
Extremely low risk of tumor growth.
Easier to control than embryonic cells.

Disadvantages

Present in the body in very small numbers.
More limited in what they can become than fetal or embryonic cells.
More difficult to grow in the laboratory.

Ethical Issues

No significant ethical issues

I'm not sure how long this has been online, but there have been advances made in our understanding of adult stem cells. Regarding the bolded sentence above, it's now known that adult stem cells can become virtually any type of cell in the body.

Stem cells taken from amniotic fluid and the risk of spontaneous abortion from amnio

Star-Telegram 02/11/2007 No quarter, little change: "Last month, researchers reported that stem cells drawn from the amniotic fluid of pregnant women have many of the properties of embryonic stem cells, but cautioned that the cells wouldn't necessarily replace embryonic cells."

There is something the scientists are leaving out when they talk of stem cells taken from amniotic fluid. I learned about this when I was pregnant with my first child and was considering amnio.

Critics of embryonic stem cell research should be appalled at taking stem cells from amniotic fluid, because the risk of spontaeous abortion from amnio is as high as 1 in 200. By saying this is better (and saying "commonly drawn" as though every pregnant woman needs/gets amnio) they are saying it's better to risk a gestating fetus than some cells in a petri dish or test tube that have the potential to become a fetus.

Here's something I found online, for anyone who doesn't know the risks of amnio:
http://www.marchofdimes.com/professionals/681_1164.asp

A clip from the article:

>>Is amniocentesis safe?Millions of women have had prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis. In 1976, after careful study, the National Institutes of Health reported that it found midtrimester amniocentesis for prenatal diagnosis to be safe. However, amniocentesis does pose a slight risk of miscarriage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rate of miscarriage is between one in 400 and one in 200 procedures.

The procedure also carries an extremely low risk of uterine infection (less than one in 1,000), which can cause miscarriage. Studies suggest that the risk of miscarriage following first-trimester amniocentesis may be three times higher than the risk after second-trimester amniocentesis. A 1998 Canadian study found the risk of miscarriage was 2.6 percent after early amniocentesis, compared to 0.8 percent after second-trimester amniocentesis.

The study also found a striking increase in the risk of a foot deformity called clubfoot after early amniocentesis. The risk of clubfoot was increased ten-fold after early amniocentesis (1.3 percent vs. 0.1 percent or 1 in 1,000 following second-trimester amniocentesis). The incidence of clubfoot following second-trimester amniocentesis does not differ from that seen in all U.S. babies.

Based upon this and other studies, doctors are rethinking the role of early amniocentesis, and many believe that if first-trimester prenatal testing is necessary, chorionic villus sampling appears safer than early amniocentesis.<<

Stem cells from fat transplanted into heart - Stem Cell Research - MSNBC.com

Stem cells from fat transplanted into heart - Stem Cell Research - MSNBC.com:

"MADRID - Doctors have implanted adult stem cells extracted from a man’s fat tissue through liposuction into his heart, in an experimental treatment for angina and heart disease, a Spanish hospital said on Tuesday."

This is great. I hope it helps him. Science has proven that adult stem cells can become virtually any cell type in the body. If only there were an easier way...more snips from the article:

“In just five hours approximately the cells were extracted, purified, selected and implanted with the aim of regenerating new blood vessels which may allow them to flow blood properly to the heart of the patient”, the hospital said.

and

Plastic surgeons extracted the fat tissue from the patient’s abdomen and implanted the cells using a catheter.

Good luck Mr. X!

What are adult stem cells? [Stem Cell Information]

Adult stem cells aren't as easy to work with as embryonic so there are fewer studies being done. Here's some info on what they are and what they can do. Go to the web site for the full text.

What are adult stem cells? [Stem Cell Information]: "IV. What are adult stem cells?
An adult stem cell is an undifferentiated cell found among differentiated cells in a tissue or organ, can renew itself, and can differentiate to yield the major specialized cell types of the tissue or organ. The primary roles of adult stem cells in a living organism are to maintain and repair the tissue in which they are found. Some scientists now use the term somatic stem cell instead of adult stem cell. Unlike embryonic stem cells, which are defined by their origin (the inner cell mass of the blastocyst), the origin of adult stem cells in mature tissues is unknown.

Research on adult stem cells has recently generated a great deal of excitement. Scientists have found adult stem cells in many more tissues than they once thought possible. This finding has led scientists to ask whether adult stem cells could be used for transplants. In fact, adult blood forming stem cells from bone marrow have been used in transplants for 30 years. Certain kinds of adult stem cells seem to have the ability to differentiate into a number of different cell types, given the right conditions. If this differentiation of adult stem cells can be controlled in the laboratory, these cells may become the basis of therapies for many serious common diseases."

Stem Cells - Trophic Factors Generate Functioning New Neurons for Brain Repair

Trophic Factors Generate Functioning New Neurons for Brain Repair: "In only the last decade, research has confirmed that the brain contains its own stem cells — progenitor cells that can become adult cells of different highly specialized types. Stem cells in the brain, called neural stem cells, or NSCs, can produce both of the main kinds of cells in the brain, neurons and glia. (Roughly speaking, neurons are the main messaging cells of the brain, sending information long-distance by electrochemical impulses, while glia have a supporting role, in cleanup, immune, and other functions, which they carry out by coordinating with other brain cells locally.)
